Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Division of Communications and Advocacy at UN Women supports the positioning of women’s empowerment and gender equality as key issues on the international agenda and establishes UN Women’s role as the global authority in this context. This entails developing and promoting high-quality content, communicating about UN Women’s work through digital and social media and engaging a global audience online.

Scope of Work

Under the supervision of the Social Media Lead, the Social Media Consultant will:

Content Strategy & Development


  • Develop strategic, impactful, and platform-specific copy, asset proposals and content ideas aligned with UN Women’s priorities, campaigns, and thematic areas.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ideate and steer the production of high-quality social media content in multiple formats and languages (e.g., event coverage, GIFs, polls, videos, stickers, etc.).
  • Tailor tone of voice, messaging, and calls-to-action based on channels and target audiences. 

Cross-Organizational & Coordination

  • Work closely with colleagues across the communication team and HQ focal points to curate engaging content that demonstrates UN Women’s impact.
  • Review social media content plans from field offices and partner recognition campaigns.
  • Respond to colleagues across the organization on incoming social media requests. 

Analytics, Insights & Optimization

  • Evaluate the performance of posts, accounts, and campaigns (e.g., reach, shares, engagement).
  • Implement lessons learned from analytics towards content strategy and development.
  • Support providing social media insights, data-driven recommendations, and regular growth tracking.
  • Support identifying opportunities for UN Women to engage on based on current conversations, trends, and emerging social media features.

Technical & Administrative Support

  • Curate and update social media packages and organize relevant materials on SharePoint and other platforms.
  • Provide light technical support (e.g., troubleshooting platform access, coordinating with publishing tools).

  • Perform other duties as requested during the consultancy.

Qualifications

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent in communications, media, journalism or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in social media content creation, writing, and editing.
  • Experience developing and implementing social media campaigns.
  • Strong ability to write engaging, platform-specific copy for global audiences.
  • Experience using social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, sprout social, Meltwater) and analytics/listening tools.
  • Experience with content production, including advising on video, graphics and short-form content (e.g., Reels, TikTok).
  • Strong understanding of social media trends, platform best practices and emerging features.
  • Fluency in English required,
