FAQs
GenderJobs.org provides a comprehensive selection of gender jobs, curated through intersectional feminist lenses, BY gender professionals FOR current and aspiring gender professionals. We define gender jobs as:
- Jobs with an explicit focus on gender equality, women’s rights and LGBTQI+ rights at an organisation with a clear equality and social impact mission (e.g. Gender-based violence specialist at CARE International)
- Jobs that might not explicitly have a focus on gender equality BUT are within an organisation/unit with a clear gender equality mission (e.g. Human Resources Officer in the Gender Equality Institute of a University).
We believe that LGBTQI+ rights are an essential component of gender equality and we want to encourage the sector to go beyond the more prominent binary and heteronormative understanding of gender equality that organisations tend to integrate in their work.
We speak of intersectional feminist lenses because we are interested in:
- Amplifying opportunities and organisations that address intersecting patriarchal, heteronormative, transphobic, racist, neocolonialist, ableist, ageist, fatphobic systems of oppression.
- Making gender jobs more and more accessible by providing tools to navigate their complexity and by showcasing their variety through our free platform GenderJobs.org
- Promoting and advocating for feminist and inclusive employment policies: e.g. in terms of diversity, equity & inclusion; anti-racist approaches; considerations related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC); parental leave; PSEA and harassment; pay transparency and fair remuneration for gender expertise; menstrual and menopause health considerations, and more.
No, we do not share any unpaid internships as advertised by the UN system, in the public sector, and by large NGOs or foundations.
We may share unpaid opportunities advertised by local feminist organisations and movements, which often rely on volunteer-based activities. We believe in the value of amplifying the work feminist movements lead at different levels, and we understand that not all organisations access core funding that can support them to hire paid staff. Lack of funding is the reality for feminist and LGBTQI+ rights organisations and movements, as documented by AWID, FRIDA, the Black Feminist Fund, ILGA Europe, Mama Cash & Aestrae Lesbian Foundation for Justice and others.
These opportunities will always be clearly flagged as “Volunteering (unpaid)”.
Considering that these might take very different formats depending on the country, when they are remunerated at least with a stipend, we will include these in the “Internships (paid)” category.
FAQs for job seekers
As a job seeker, it will always be free to use the platform to seek for opportunities. The gender jobs landscape can be difficult to navigate, thus we hope the opportunities we share will break down barriers in understanding the field. We will also never post jobs that ask the applicant to pay to apply. If you encounter such a post, please report it to [email protected].
The “Apply” button will redirect you to the website of the organisation advertising the position, and you will need to follow the instructions on their website. Application instructions will vary from one job/ organisation to the other, so make sure you read and follow instructions accordingly. It is not possible to apply for a position directly through GenderJobs.org nor to submit your CV to us.
No, we do not endorse candidates to the job posters/ organisations. We suggest reaching out to your network e.g. on LinkedIn for a referral. We also do not match applicants with recruiters/jobs. If you encounter some claim to match you with a job as part of GenderJobs.org, please report it to [email protected].
You will be able to filter opportunities by Thematic Area, Career Category, whether they are in the Humanitarian or Development sector (if relevant), Organisation Type, Remote Option, Location (by region and by country), Right to Work Requirements, Renumeration/ Pay Transparency, Years of Experience, Work Schedule, Length of Contract.
We believe that this comprehensive list of filters will allow for a more accurate job search and that it will provide a valuable key to better understand what types of gender jobs exist out there, which organisations are looking for gender expertise, etc. We want to provide a clearer framework to help job seekers and gender professionals, particularly young professionals, to better decipher the complex and exciting variety of gender jobs.

This was decided through conversations with gender professionals and activists in the different regions, and inspired by the work of other organisations working in the gender equality space, such as Mama Cash.

The GenderJobs.org team and job posters will make sure to provide detailed information for each position, so that job seekers can effectively and accurately filter those opportunities.
However, the reality of the sector is that a lot of information is not consistently included in job adverts. For example, not all job descriptions include details on the Remote working option or on the Right to work requirements. If you are specifically looking to see only positions that have a “Remote anywhere” option, you can decide to select as well the filter “Not specified”, which might include opportunities where the remote option is actually allowed, but simply not specified in the job description. When that is the case, it will be necessary for you to follow up directly with the hiring team of the organisation in question. In our conversations with organisations/ employers, we will keep advocating for transparency.
There might not be information on the specific Years of experience required for a role. In this case, however, we do not see it as an issue of transparency. In fact, we actually encourage organisations/ employers to go beyond strict requirements for years of formal work experience, but rather consider candidates for competences and skills that might be acquired in other ways, such as in the activism space.
We strongly believe gender expertise should be valued, recognised and fairly compensated. Because of this, we encourage job posters/ organisations to explicitly indicate their salary range in their job descriptions.
Since pay transparency is still not the norm across the sector, we allow organisations to advertise positions that do not disclose a salary, BUT they will be required to select the “Salary not disclosed” option when posting a job, and their position will not appear in the listing if/ when job seekers select the “With pay transparency” filter option.
We understand some organizations state they pay “market value” yet underpay their staff. Thus, we will keep promoting pay transparency and advocating for change, as well as denouncing organisations that are not valuing gender expertise nor respecting gender professionals, while reflecting in the website the current reality of gender jobs.

Before being visible on GenderJobs.org, the newly added position will be reviewed by the gender professionals of the GenderJobs.org team, who will also ensure to add any missing information. If the job is not selected for inclusion on GenderJobs.org, the team will notify you and get back to you with more details.
We strongly believe feminist movements and organisations on the ground should be able to see their positions amplified and accessed by qualified gender professionals, but we understand the struggles they face to access flexible core funding in the first place. Therefore, there will always be a free option to post opportunities on GenderJobs.org.
We are exploring paid options for organisations that can afford it/ that have dedicated HR budget for job advertisement, for them to contribute with reasonable amounts to post a job and reach the thousands of gender professionals that access the website and Gender Jobs Newsletter every week.
Please contact the GenderJobs.org team at [email protected].
Advertised gender jobs will be removed from the website automatically the day after the application deadline. Positions that do not indicate a specific deadline will be online for 6 weeks. If you wish to keep it for longer, please contact us at: [email protected].
