1) Criteria for selection as Trustee
Trustees (including the Co-Chairs of Trustees) are on the Board in an individual, rather than in an organisational capacity. These positions are therefore open for applications from both members and non-members of GADN, although it is expected that Trustees will become members if they are not already. GADN’s Board of Trustees endeavours to be a diverse Board and will be looking for candidates who can bring different perspectives to the leadership of the network.
GADN is seeking people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences to join our Board of Trustees. As we continue working to decolonise our practice and build an anti-racist organisation, we actively welcome applications from Black women and Women of Colour who we recognise are underrepresented in decision-making spaces in the UK international development sector.
Among our Trustees we are looking for the following attributes. It is not necessary for any one candidate to meet all the criteria.
i. Commitment and understanding:
● Demonstrable commitment to the vision, mission, aims and values of GADN
● Understanding of and commitment to promoting women’s and girls’ rights and intersectional feminism
● Understanding of and commitment to promoting anti-racism and decolonisation in the development sector
● A good understanding of the social, economic and political context in which GADN operates and a willingness to further develop this understanding
● Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, governance responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship
ii. Experience: On this occasion, the Board is particularly interested in appointing a Trustee who has experience in at least two of the following areas:
● Senior management with substantial experience of engaging with boards
● Serving as a Truste and/or experience of working directly with boards of trustees in the UK aid sector
● Working in a GADN member organisation Experience in at least one of the following areas is desirable:Anti-racism and decolonisation ● Fundraising
● Human Resource management
● Working in an organisation that promotes women’s rights and gender equality
● Challenging racism, disablism, homophobia or transphobia
iii. Skills and attributes:
● Proven feminist leadership skills
● Strategic thinking
● Ability to work constructively as a member of a team with good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish good working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
● Demonstrable integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and willingness to speak one’s mind
● Ability to think creatively and to find solutions
● Numeracy and the ability to understand budgets
● Ability to act impartially and without bias
